March 8, 2008: (Deuteronomy 7-9; Mark 15)
Old Testament Lesson: I remember teaching my son how to ride a bicycle. There were numerous instructions given for his safety. I loved him because I knew the consequences of disobedience. The land the Lord is giving the Israelites is a Promiseland, but failing to follow His instructions will result in serious injury. They are warned not to intermarry with the pagans in the land. Intimacy with them will result in breaking the first three commandments. Instead they are to remove the altars and shatter the sacred pillars of the pagans. Forty years earlier their fathers viewed themselves as “grasshoppers.” God reminds them that they can take the land because of who He is.
New Testament Lesson: Pilate wanted to release Jesus. Yet, he was trapped. He asked a very important question, “What shall I do with this man you call the King of the Jews?” Okay, now ask yourself the same question. What are you going to do with Jesus?” Pilate washed his hands of the entire situation and removed Jesus from his sight. For us we must answer the question. Jesus is our Savior. He is however also our Lord. Are we going to disregard Him or let Him lead our lives.
